Standard Bank’s Joy of Jazz festival consistently presents a selection of gifted musicians and this year was no different. We spoke to the festival’s marketing director, Zikie Molusi:

The 11th annual Standard Bank Joy of Jazz took place this past weekend in what is Jozi's hottest jazz event of the year. Jazz fans converged upon Newtown to see their favourite acts live and to discover new talent.
The event opened at the purpose-built Dinaledi stage with the star-studded Gauteng Jazz Orchestra along with singer Auriol Hays followed by up and coming R&B singer, Brian Temba. Rahsaan Patterson closed off with a stellar performance, showing off his outstanding vocal capabilities on his own songs and a few surprise covers. Read more »

After a well-received opening of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival 2010 on Thursday night, the rest of the event could only get better. Unlike on Day 1; Day 2 and 3 consisted of performances on 4 separate stages within a half-kilometere radius around the Market Theatre area. Last night marked the opening of the annual, prestigious Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival in Newtown, Johannesburg. Some came straight from work for a chilled evening of high-quality music performances at Johannesburg's popular art central. In celebration of Women’s Month and the legacy of women journalists in South Africa’s popular media, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will again be offering a five-day practical workshop for women arts writers as part of the event’s educational programme.
The Lady Porcupine arts journalism workshop, which takes place from August 23 to 27 in Newtown, will be run by Gwen Ansell, music/jazz writer and journalism trainer. Guests include poet and creative writing facilitator Myesha Jenkins and Ceri Moelwyn-Hughes, historian of women in jazz, plus others still to be confirmed. Read more »

Our entire lives are surrounded by music, from advertising jingles, music in the elevator, mobile phone ringtones to regular radio. It's near unavoidable in the modern world. Chances are pretty high that your teenage son/daughter or relative is also totally engrossed in pop music to the point where their preferred genre is quite often extended to being a "culture" of sorts. They may see your jazz music as old and confusing. How do you change this perception? Read more »
Internet Radio is basically streamed audio over an Internet connection (as opposed to normal radio which makes use of radio waves). Because the audio streams, you don't really have control over which songs get played nor can you fast-forward or rewind, just like normal radio. One of the big advantages of this form of media consumption over traditional radio though is that you can listen to highly specialised stations. Read more »
It’s almost hard to believe that Joy of Jazz is in its 11th year and in all this time the jazz offering has been nothing but exceptional; 2010’s lineup is no different.
One of the most celebrated contemporary jazz trumpeters of our time, Chris Botti will be gracing the Joy of Jazz stages for two nights, much to the delight of local jazz fans.
