Power plant deal lights the way for project finance

Standard Bank’s work in providing project finance to for the Morupule B power station in Botswana was last week recognised internationally as the “African Power Deal of the Year” by Project Finance International magazine.

This project was the first major transaction involving Standard Bank and the Industrial Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) since the Chinese bank took a 20% stake in Standard Bank in February 2008.

Standard Bank and ICBC were joint lead arrangers on a US$1.6bn debt package for Botswana Power Corporation to expand its plant near Palapye in eastern Botswana. Read more »

Financial education drive in Botswana

Stanbic Bank Botswana has begun a financial literacy campaign at schools in Botswana.

It has been found that many people in Botswana, regardless of their level of education, do not have a basic understanding of financial principles. This means that they battle to gainfully engage in constructive dialogue around financial matters. Read more »

Abedi Pele, one of the great pioneers of Africa football, is travelling around Africa with the Afcon Trophy - taking soccer to the people. Standard Bank is sponsoring this tour - below is Abedi's account of his recent travels on the continent:

It is my third visit to Gaborone and upon arrival, I headed straight for the office of Minister of Sports; Gladys Kokorwe.The minister had so many concerns with regards to Botswanan football. She wants to see Botswanan football develop and I must say that I share her concerns.
