"Moving Forward" and the idea of generating business amongst small to medium business is a great concept. In reality though what SMMEs need is not just an "idea", but a practical means of finding those trade partners and opportunities.
I believe if Standard Bank were to champion an inexpensive 'trade portal' focused on African small businesses, it would then be making a real contribution to putting Africa and African business on the map.
Trade portal is a possibility
Many thanks for your ideas and comments. We have had this on the radar for a while and we are again looking into providing such an online portal.
Compliance governance is however currently proving a hurdle for us as we look at a way of ensuring that necessary agreements and disclosures are in place between third parties. This is because with such a portal, Standard Bank Group cannot be drawn into the relationship between small businesses regarding their goods and services.
We continue to investigate options around this that will benefit businesses looking to broaden their trade.
We do have a relationship with Microsoft and MTN in the website www.smallcapital.co.za, which is mostly focused on South African business. Small businesses looking for opportunities may consider that site as a stepping stone to broader networking.
Any further ideas about this are most welcome.
Trade Portal
An inexpensive 'trade portal' need not focus on small businesses only. That would defeat the point of trade, and therefore, buying power. All traders can be registered traders - buyers and resellers on a single port. With Standard Bank as the back-bone traders would be able to trade in all currencies whenever and from wherever they are...
Open to all
Exactly right.

The focus here though is to level the playing fields a bit so smaller players do not get excluded by the high cost of marketing internationally.
Thanks for your comment.
